Griezmann speaks out on Mbappe being named France captain

Antoine Griezmann has stated that it was “hard to stomach” Didier Deschamps’ decision to name Kylian Mbappe captain of the France national team ahead of him.

Griezmann was widely regarded as the favorite to succeed Hugo Lloris, who announced his retirement after the 2022 World Cup.

However, Deschamps chose to give the armband to Mbappe.

The decision apparently surprised Griezmann, sparking a brief rift in the locker room. It was even suggested that the Atletico Madrid forward might retire as a result of the snub.

Speaking to Telefoot, Griezmann said: “It was hard to take, and tough. I’m 32 and, although I still have the legs, I know I’m reaching the end [of my career].

“I had a hard time stomaching it for one or two days.”
